As Autumn brings a wave of beautiful colours and a crisp in the air, we look at some of the best things you can do this season in County Down.
Just because the temperature has dropped doesn’t mean a trip to the beach is off the table. Murlough Beach is an absolutely beautiful wide sandy beach with a 2m wide pebble ridge above high water mark. Backed by an ancient sand dune system throughout its 6 km length, a good chunk of the area is designated as a National Nature Reserve. If you love bird watching or just fancy an Autumnal walk Murlough Beach is a fantastic find.
A small, picturesque town on the coast, Newcastle is a lovely seaside resort that is definitely worth a visit. Located at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, it’s a beautiful spot to take in the Autumnal scenery.
What better way to usher in the Autumn season than with a spot of pumpkin picking? Streamvale Open Farm allows kids to grab a mini wheelbarrow and go and explore their amazing pumpkin patch before taking their chosen pumpkin to the designated carving marquee where staff will be on hand to help.
Considered one of the best Norman castles in the whole of Ireland, Dundrum Castle was built by John de Courcy at the end of the 12th Century. It offers amazing views of the coast and surrounding countryside and history buffs will be intrigued to know it was once raided by Cromwell’s army in the 1650s.
Close to Newtownards, Scrabo Tower is a well-known landmark in County Down. Turreted and coming in at 125 feet high, it’s a striking building to visit.
Castlewellan Forest Park brings visitors from all over the world and boasts some seriously beautiful colours at this time of year. With mountains and the sea providing a stunning backdrop to the park, the forest’s mile-long lake is surrounded by some unusual modern sculptures for you to enjoy.
Whilst you’re there be sure to visit the Peace Maze - one of the world’s largest permanent hedge mazes.
If you’re a fan of golf then you should definitely pay a visit to the one of the most scenic and oldest golf clubs in all of Northern Ireland.
Located where the Newry River meets Carlingford Lough, the water tower was built way back in 1568 and the castle was built by Hugh de Lacy, who was the first Earl of Ulster. It’s a lovely idyllic spot to visit, just make sure you wrap up warm.
Strangford Lough is an absolutely stunning large sea loch known for fishing and scenery. Visiting Strangford Lough gives you access to a number of lovely towns and villages to visit, including Killyleagh, Newtownards, and Strangford.
You can visit the Market on the Square on the first Saturday of the month between July and December and is the perfect weekend treat for the entire family. There’s a wonderful range of artisan food and craft producers in the area and the Portaferry Market House has recently been refurbished!
