Why Northern Ireland's Beaches Aren't Just For Summer

16 February 2021

A Northern Ireland seaside holiday is a fantastic way to spend your summer; the feeling of warm sandy beaches under foot, ice cream dripping down your hand and the sun beating down on your skin.

But too often the beaches in Northern Ireland are forgotten - and that’s such a shame. Despite the colder temperature, the seaside has a wild and natural beauty that can be enjoyed just as much during the winter months.

Here’s why Northern Ireland’s beaches aren’t just for summer…

Quiet and peaceful beaches

We’ve all seen those pictures of uncomfortable crowded beaches in the height of summer. But that’s not the case once winter arrives. One of the things we love most about visiting the beach during winter is that it’s so quiet and peaceful. You feel like you have the whole beach to yourself - and sometimes you do! It gives you space and time to really take in the scenery and breathe in the sea air, something not to be missed.

Dogs are welcome

It’s pretty common for beaches to have restrictions on dogs during the peak summer months. But come winter, those restrictions are lifted and your dog can enjoy free reign of the sand! During winter you can let your furry pal paddle in the sea and run the length of the beach without worrying.

Brisk walks

Sure, we love strolling down the beach wearing nothing but a bikini or shorts and t-shirt but there is something to be said for wrapping up in a jumper, coat and scarf and taking a brisk winter walk! Northern Ireland beaches are beautifully scenic during winter and there’s so much joy to be had going for a walk in winter.

Cold water swimming

Feeling brave? Cold water swimming is a fantastic way to invigorate yourself and really gets those endorphins flowing, the feel good chemical. There are so many health benefits to cold water swimming such as increased metabolism, better circulation, boosted immune system and even reduced stress and anxiety.

Storm watching

There are some amazing storms to watch along the coast during the winter months - from a safe distance of course! Watch waves crash against the harbour, the clouds broiling over the sea; it’s a real treat to watch mother nature do her thing!

Get cosy in the pub

After a windswept walk along the beach, find a table in a cosy pub right next to the fire. Treat yourself to some home cooked seasonal grub and a hearty drink as you take in the beautiful winter scenery of Northern Ireland - once lockdown is lifted of course!
