More Brits looking to buy holiday homes in the UK amid COVID-19 travel restrictions

6 October 2020

The coronavirus pandemic has made drastic changes to the way we all live our lives. And travelling has been one thing that has been impacted dramatically. With various travel restrictions in place, and with the UK government imposing the need to self-isolate and quarantine on return from a number of countries, more Brits are considering investing in a holiday home here in the UK.

A holiday home abroad has long been the dream of many but recent research conducted by The Guild of Property Professionals has found that “a third of Brits either currently own a second home or would consider buying one in the UK, with 35 to 44-year-olds the most likely to consider purchasing a second home in the country.”

Staycations in the UK are on the rise which has meant attention has turned to the domestic property market with people looking for a holiday home that provides escapism, rest and relaxation in a safe and quarantine-free environment.

Reduction in stamp duty has helped boost the market

Iain McKenzie, chief executive of The Guild, said:

“Approximately one million people in the UK, which equates to around 4% of all households, have turned their dream into a reality and own a second property.

“With the current demand for property surging and the stamp duty holiday in play until March 31st 2021, we could see more and more people tempted to purchase the cottage in the countryside or flat overlooking the beach.

“Investing in a second property is a way for people to have a holiday home they can enjoy with their family when they want to… people buying a second home are paying around half the stamp duty they would have paid prior to the SDLT holiday announcement, which definitely makes it a more attractive and financially feasible option.”
